About the Studio
A practice built on patience and clarity
Ravel Studio was established to offer Malaysian adults a different kind of financial education — grounded, unhurried, and free from the pressure of financial product sales.
Back to HomeOur story
Ravel Studio began in Johor Bahru after its founder spent several years watching adults — friends, colleagues, neighbours — make decisions about their household finances not from a position of clarity, but from a combination of habit, anxiety, and incomplete information.
The name comes from the weaver's vocabulary: to ravel a thread is to separate it carefully from a tangle so that it can be worked with again. That is, in essence, what the studio aims to do for each person who comes through the door — or joins a session online.
The studio is deliberately small. At any given time, there are a limited number of places available across programmes. This is a considered choice, not a marketing tactic: the work requires attention, and attention is finite.
We are based at our studio in Taman Bukit Kempas, Johor Bahru, and offer online sessions for individual and household programmes to clients across Malaysia.
Our approach
Ravel Studio is not a financial advisory firm and does not offer investment advice, market forecasts, or product recommendations. Every programme is purely educational in purpose.
Sessions are structured so that participants leave with a tangible, usable outcome — a saving framework they understand, a clearer way of reading a financial news article, or a written document describing their household's financial life. The work is complete in itself; no follow-on product is sold.
The facilitator works at the participant's pace. This is not a performance metric or a scheduling note — it is the operating principle of the studio. Financial understanding deepens at different speeds for different people, and the programme design reflects this.
- No product recommendations or commissions
- Content adapted to each participant's starting point
- Written materials produced where appropriate
- Studio sessions in Johor Bahru and online
The people at the studio
Suraya Ahmad
Founder & Lead Facilitator
Suraya has worked in financial education for over eleven years, primarily with adults navigating the transition between early and mid-career. She holds a postgraduate qualification in financial planning and has delivered programmes independently since 2018.
Reza Harun
Programme Facilitator
Reza facilitates the Reading Financial News With Care programme. He has a background in journalism and financial media, which informs the programme's focus on how financial narratives are constructed and how to read them with appropriate care.
Nurul Liyana
Studio Coordinator
Nurul handles scheduling, enquiries, and the administrative side of the studio. She is the first point of contact for most enquiries and ensures that the practical side of participation — booking, materials, session links — is as straightforward as possible.
How we work — standards and practice
No product sales
Ravel Studio does not sell or recommend financial products. The facilitators receive no commissions and have no financial relationship with any product provider. Education is the only service on offer.
Confidential by design
Everything discussed in a session is held in confidence. In household and one-to-one programmes, no third party receives information about the participant's financial situation or discussions without explicit consent.
Clear written materials
Where a programme produces written materials, they are drafted in plain language, reviewed for clarity before delivery, and provided in a format the participant can read independently after sessions conclude.
Qualified facilitation
Facilitators at Ravel Studio hold relevant qualifications in financial planning or adult education. Knowledge is kept current through ongoing professional reading and periodic attendance at financial education conferences in Malaysia and regionally.
Group sizes kept small
The small-group Reading Financial News programme runs with a maximum of eight participants. This is not a financial constraint — it is a quality standard. Smaller groups allow for questions, discussion, and a learning environment that responds to the people in the room.
Post-programme follow-up
All programmes include a brief follow-up period after the final session during which participants may send questions by email. This is included in the programme fee and ensures that points of uncertainty encountered after sessions end can be addressed.
Financial education in Malaysia — what this studio offers
Adults in Malaysia face a particular set of financial information challenges. The range of financial products available through banks, insurers, and investment platforms has expanded considerably over the past decade, but access to independent, non-commercial financial education has not kept pace. Many people encounter financial information primarily through news coverage or product marketing — two sources with very different purposes from education.
Ravel Studio works with this reality directly. The Reading Financial News With Care programme, for example, is built on the observation that most adults who consume financial news do not have a clear framework for separating editorial commentary from information that is genuinely relevant to their household planning. Developing that framework — slowly, carefully, with real examples — is what the programme does.
The Household Finance Story engagement takes a different approach: rather than addressing a skill gap, it works with the household as a whole to produce a clear, written account of their financial position and intentions. The value of this document is not predictive. It does not forecast outcomes or suggest a plan. It describes what is, and what the household has considered as its direction — giving both adults a shared language for their financial lives.
Ravel Studio serves adults in Johor Bahru and across Malaysia through online delivery. Programmes are conducted in English. The studio operates from its Taman Bukit Kempas location and welcomes enquiries from individuals, couples, and households at any stage of their financial understanding.
